Lithium Wheelchair Battery Charging: Eight Rules That Actually Extend Life

Charging is the one maintenance task a wheelchair user performs daily, and the advice online is a mess β€” half of it was written for phones. These are the rules we ship in our manuals, with the reasoning behind each.

Rule 1: The 20–80 habit, when convenient

Lithium cells age slowest between 20% and 80% charge. If your chair is used daily and charged nightly, this hardly matters β€” replace the pack in five years regardless. The habit matters for chairs used hard every day for years: riding the middle band can add 20–30% cycle life. Don't obsess; do apply it if it's easy.

Rule 2: Charge after use, not from empty

Unlike nickel batteries, lithium has no memory effect. There is zero benefit to running the pack flat, and every deep discharge stresses the cells. Plug in when you're done for the day β€” partial charges are perfectly healthy.

Rule 3: Respect the temperature window

Charging below 0Β°C plates metallic lithium permanently inside Li-ion cells β€” this is why BMS units simply refuse below freezing. Let a cold chair warm up indoors for an hour before plugging in. Above 45Β°C, charge slowly or wait. The pack warming slightly during charge is normal; being hot to touch is not.

Rule 4: The charger is part of the battery system

A proper lithium charger runs CC/CV: constant current until near-full, then constant voltage taper. Cheap units skip the taper stage and hold cells at peak voltage β€” the fastest way to age them. If your original charger dies, replace it with the manufacturer's spec, not the marketplace's cheapest "compatible".

Rule 5: Unplug at full for storage

For a chair parked a week or more: charge or discharge to about 50–70%, then disconnect. The BMS draws a small standby current even when off β€” over months, a "full" stored pack can self-discharge into the damaged zone.

Rule 6: Top up stored packs quarterly

Self-discharge runs 2–5% per month. Check stored packs every 8–12 weeks and bring them back to the 50–70% band. Calendar in the phone; two minutes of attention per quarter buys years of pack life.

Rule 7: Match pairs

Two-battery chairs: always charge both with their own charger ports (or the dual-port original), and replace both together. One fresh pack charged alongside a tired one is cycled against its limits constantly.

Rule 8: Ignore overnight fear

A functioning BMS terminates charge autonomously; overnight charging of a healthy pack with its own charger is fine and is what most of our users do. The danger stories come from dead chargers and no-name packs without protection circuits β€” which is Rule 4 again.
